Many
of the substances which we are exposed to everyday
including pesticides, solvents, food coloring,
preservatives, plastics, infections, heavy metals,
and other substances can cause toxic, hormonal,
and sensitivities that can make a person ill.
The illness can be very subtle and difficult to
evaluate.
We live near one of the largest
sewer lines in the Mississippi, as well as airflows
which vent droplets and substances which may be
even in the water, or the air. Obviously, the
government is in a difficult situation. In the
past we were told to eat as much fish as we wanted.
Now we are allowed only so much per week. While
an environmental evaluation is embedded in the
regular physical exam and history, many patients
are unaware their pain, and illness may be to
a total load of toxins in the patients. Some substances
may never leave the body easily, and so the metabolic
system itself can be the toxic load, finally overwhelming
the body’s defenses, and ability to detoxify.
For example, the half life of DDT, a pesticide,
in the body, is 50 years. Epoxides can cause cancer,
and this is worrisome.
Dr. Fortier-Bensen has been attending the American
Academy of Environmental Medicine for years, and
has been taught by a number of leaders and experts
in the field, including Dr. Bill Rea who taught
with Dr. Fortier-Bensen at Capitol University
Medical School. While this is not the forefront
of his practice, Dr. Fortier-Bensen, is aware
of the effect may cause problems with patients,
the patient will need to be aware of this as a
problem, and be suspicious, particularly with
complex conditions. Hormesis is a concept not
well understood by most conventional physicians.
A small amount of a substance in the body does
not mean it is insignificant. Some people are
so sensitive to peanut that even the process of
someone eating peanut butter and breathing on
the sensitive person can quickly cause the sensitive
person a problem. For more information call 985
