Health is changing
Healing is balance

Within the programs of the Center for Functional Medicine, Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine form an empiric and comprehensive variety of evaluation and treatment methods. These methods have been practiced in Asia for over 3,000 years. The benefits of keeping balance, preventing diseases, and improving well being places, Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine as a premier program in any Functional Medicine Clinic. Acupuncture has been shown to provide generalized oxygenation, and increased blood flow to specific areas of treatment, and this goes beyond the endorphin release that is often cited. Dr. Fortier-Bensen assisted by Laurel Colpitts, a licensed Master of Acupuncture can treat over 43 common ailments such as: Constipation, IBS, Painful Menstruation, Asthma, Migraines, tension headaches, low back, neck and shoulder pain, Dental pain, Depression, Insomnia, Nicotine Addiction, Post-Operative pain and nausea, and Infertility.

Dr. Fortier-Bensen has used acupuncture in treatment of structural or sports medicine problems, and continues to find ways to improve the repair of the body using both the acupuncture needle, as well as herbs. This combination is well observed and used in Oriental medicine. Herbal remedies give us the idea that every plant on this earth small, large, beautiful, or insignificant has a gift from God somewhere in it. What does Acupuncture treat?
Acupuncture is effective in the treatment of a wide variety of problems including but not limited to:
– All kinds of muscular-skeletal pain including back pain, neck, and shoulder pain, tennis elbow, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
– Digestive disorders: indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, constipation, and diarrhea.
– Respiratory disorders: colds and sore throats, sinusitis, asthma, and bronchitis.
– Headaches, arthritis, fibromyalgia and autoimmune dysfunction.
– Urinary, menstrual, and reproductive problems.
– Facial wrinkles and sagging.

Acupuncture is superior at relieving conditions due to tension and stress.

Does Acupuncture hurt?
Acupuncture needles are solid, disposable, stainless steel needles. They are very thin (about twice as thick as a human hair) and have rounded points. Usually insertions are comfortable. Frequently you dont feel them at all.
There are non-needle techniques available for patients who are especially fearful of needles.

How many treatments will I need?
The number of treatments needed varies from person to person. It depends mainly upon the severity of the condition, how long it has been a problem, and the overall health of the patient. Chronic conditions usually require at least 10 treatments and often several months of treatment. Acute problems may need only a few treatments. Quarterly treatments are effective for health maintenance.

What is acupuncture and how does it work?
Acupuncture is a method of encouraging the body to promote natural healing and improve functioning. This is accomplished though the insertion of needles and/or the application of heat or electricity to specific acupuncture points.

Classically, acupuncture works by unblocking the balancing the body's energy pathways. Like rivers irrigate, these pathways nourish the tissues and organs. An obstruction, like a dam, can block up the flow of nourishing energy to one part of the body and restrict in other parts. These energy pathways, called meridians, can be influenced by the insertion of needles. Needling can remove obstructions and balance the flows of nourishing energy. Through acupuncture treatment both the muscular-skeletal system and the internal organs can be effected.

The scientific explanation is that acupuncture stimulates the nervous system to release chemicals which can influence the body's own internal regulating systems.

The improved energy and chemical balance stimulate natural healing and both emotional and physical wellness.

What lifestyle changes may be suggested?
You may be asked to make dietary changes or make simple additions to your daily routine, such as drinking more water, in order to promote health.
